Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:99.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/99.0

Steps to reproduce:

  • Open Firefox (Developer Edition) (no update is installed).
  • (Do some other stuff, apparently Firefox downloaded an update in the background.)
  • Next, go to about:profiles and launch another profile, leaving the default profile still open.

Actual results:

Before launching the profile, Firefox displays the update install progress bar, even though the default profile is still open, then opens the window of the new profile.
Next, I get several WerFault popups of Firefox processes crashing. Had to completely quit and restart Firefox.

Expected results:

I don't think Firefox should update when launching a profile if other profiles are still open.

Hello, thanks for filing a bug!

We actually already know about this issue, it's described in Bug 1480452. As mentioned there, we have discussed the idea of not updating if other profiles are open. Unfortunately, it's not uncommon for malware to want to prevent Firefox from updating, and it's a bit too easy for malware to pretend to be Firefox in order to prevent it from ever updating.

We do have some other ideas for how to fix this. Unfortunately, they will take some time to implement.
